UNIPORT student sets lover ablaze during pregnancy dispute in Rivers, leading to his death. Police confirm arrest and ongoing investigation
The Rivers State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a 300-level UNIPORT student who set her lover ablaze following a heated argument in a private residence in Choba, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.

The incident, which occurred on Sunday, involved 32-year-old Sunny Amadi, who later died from injuries sustained in the fire.

Police say the altercation reportedly stemmed from a dispute over the student’s pregnancy.
Identified as Cynthia Chukwundah, the female undergraduate from the University of Port Harcourt allegedly ignited the fire during the argument. Both individuals suffered burns from the incident.

Spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the tragic event in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Tuesday.
“The Rivers State Police Command is aware of and deeply concerned about a circulating social media report depicting a fire incident that occurred at No. 11B Okoro Street, Choba, Port Harcourt,” she stated.
According to Iringe-Koko, the victim, Amadi, was from Elibrada Community in Emohua Local Government Area and was rushed to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH), where he later died while receiving treatment.
Police detectives from Choba Division reportedly visited both the scene and the hospital after receiving the initial report at 11:12 a.m. on Sunday.
The police spokesperson revealed that Cynthia is currently receiving treatment under police watch due to burns sustained in the incident.
She also confirmed that Cynthia is heavily pregnant with the deceased’s child.
“Due to her critical condition, she is unable to provide a detailed account of the incident, but will do so when her condition is stable,” Iringe-Koko added.
She noted that the probable cause of the fire remains under investigation, and a thorough probe is ongoing to establish the full circumstances.
