President Bola Tinubu has formally requested the Senate to confirm the nomination of Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe as Nigeria’s new Minister of Power, following the resignation of Adebayo Adelabu.
The request was conveyed in a letter addressed to the Senate and read during Tuesday’s plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio. In the letter, Tinubu urged lawmakers to expedite consideration of the nominee in line with constitutional provisions.
Akpabio subsequently referred the nomination to the Committee of the Whole for immediate review and possible confirmation.

Tegbe’s nomination comes after Adelabu stepped down in March 2026 to pursue his gubernatorial ambition in Oyo State ahead of the 2027 elections. His resignation complied with a directive requiring political appointees seeking elective office to relinquish their positions.
According to the Presidency, the nomination is part of efforts to reinforce ongoing reforms in Nigeria’s power sector. Officials say the move is aimed at improving grid stability, boosting electricity supply, and attracting long-term investment under the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Tegbe, an indigene of Oyo State, brings over 30 years of experience in fiscal policy, economic reform, and advisory services across both public and private sectors. He previously served as Senior Partner and Head of Advisory Services at KPMG Africa and currently holds the position of Director-General and Global Liaison for the Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership.
He has also played key roles in national policy development, including chairing the National Tax Policy Implementation Committee inaugurated in 2025, and contributing to regulatory reforms in the power sector through engagements with key industry institutions.
