Ijebu-Remo State Creation Push Hits Major Milestone as 75 Senators Back Proposal

The campaign for the creation of Ijebu-Remo State has recorded a major breakthrough after the proposal sponsored by the Senator representing Ogun East, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, secured the backing of 75 senators, exceeding the constitutional requirement needed to move the process forward.

The latest endorsements came from Senator Joseph Ikpea (Edo North), Senator Francis Faduyile (Ondo South), and Senator Danladi Halilu (Nasarawa North), raising the total number of supporting senators to 75. This surpasses the two-thirds constitutional threshold of 73 senators required under the constitutional amendment process.

The development marks a significant milestone in the long-standing campaign to restore the old Ijebu Province as a constituent state of the federation.

Senator Daniel, who is the sponsor and leading advocate of the proposal, has consistently argued that the demand is driven by historical justice, equity, administrative efficiency, economic viability, and the need to bring governance closer to the people.

Beyond sponsoring the bill, the former Ogun State governor has led extensive consultations and bipartisan engagements across the National Assembly, helping to build broad support for what has become one of the most advanced state creation proposals currently before the legislature.

Although the proposal has cleared a critical hurdle in the Senate, it must still pass through other constitutional stages, including approval by the House of Representatives, endorsement by State Houses of Assembly, and presidential assent before it can become law.

For the people of Ijebuland and Remoland, the latest achievement signals renewed optimism that the decades-old quest for a separate state is moving closer to constitutional reality. Supporters also view the milestone as a reflection of Senator Daniel’s sustained efforts to build consensus and advance constitutional reforms through the legislative process.
