The Bayo Adelabu governorship declaration in Ibadan on Monday has sparked controversy following claims by the Oyo Concerned Youths that top leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and members of the National Assembly deliberately stayed away from the event.
In a statement issued on May 12 and signed by its chairman, Biola Akinlade, the group described the absence of serving senators, House of Representatives members, and other influential APC stakeholders as a clear sign of internal disapproval within the party.
According to the group, the declaration event — which reportedly featured a free performance by Fuji musician Pasumaand cash giveaways to attendees — failed to attract the expected political support despite extensive publicity and mobilization efforts.
The statement alleged that no serving federal lawmaker from Oyo State attended the gathering, while several party elders, grassroots coordinators, and key APC leaders were also absent.
The youth group further criticized Adelabu’s performance as Minister of Power, claiming his tenure had not produced “verifiable projects” or significant political engagement within Oyo State.
They also argued that the declaration lacked a clear development agenda for the state, describing it as “long on pageantry and short on substance.”
“We urge the people of Oyo to see through this pattern of using concerts and handouts as a substitute for performance and accountability,” the statement read.
The group, however, encouraged residents to prioritize competence, integrity, and proven service records when making future electoral decisions.
