Peter Obi, Nonye Soludo Celebrate Nigerian Nurses as Pillars of Healthcare

Former Peter Obi and the wife of the Anambra State Governor, Nonye Soludo, have commended Nigerian nurses and midwives for their unwavering dedication and critical contributions to the country’s healthcare system.

They made the remarks on Monday during activities marking the 2026 World Nurses Day celebration.

In a statement released to commemorate the occasion, Obi described nurses as the backbone of Nigeria’s healthcare sector, applauding their compassion, resilience, and commitment despite the numerous challenges confronting the profession.

The former presidential candidate acknowledged the vital role nurses continue to play in sustaining healthcare delivery nationwide, stressing that their efforts remain indispensable to the survival of the system.

Obi also reiterated his support for the health sector through investments in schools and colleges of nursing and midwifery aimed at strengthening healthcare manpower development across the country.

He further highlighted the harsh realities faced by many Nigerian nurses, including inadequate medical equipment, overwhelming patient-to-nurse ratios, and intense physical and emotional demands.

Despite these conditions, he praised their professionalism and dedication to patient care.

Speaking on the global impact of Nigerian nurses, Obi noted that many have distinguished themselves internationally through research, clinical excellence, and healthcare innovation, thereby enhancing Nigeria’s image in the global medical community.

Also speaking, Dr. Nonye Soludo described nurses as unsung heroes whose compassion and sacrifices continue to transform healthcare delivery and uplift communities.

In her message marking this year’s theme, “Our Nurses, Our Future: Empowered Nurses Save Lives,” the founder of the Healthy Living Initiative commended nurses for their resilience, commitment, and selfless service in Anambra State and beyond.

According to her, nurses remain central to patient recovery and emotional support, often working tirelessly through difficult conditions to provide comfort, hope, and quality care.

“Behind every recovering patient is a dedicated nurse who often stays awake through the night, offering reassurance in moments of fear and anxiety, while providing care with patience, strength and love,” she stated.

She added that the dedication of nurses continues to save lives, strengthen families, and preserve the dignity of communities.

Mrs. Soludo wished nurses a happy International Nurses Day and encouraged them to remain steadfast in their commitment to quality healthcare delivery.
