Southeast Vice Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Austin Umahi, yesterday said the defection of 15 senators from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to PDP showed that the days of President Muhammadu Buhari-led government were numbered.
He noted that the defections had proved that Nigerians have lost confidence in the APC government, which brought more hardship on them and urged the electorate to vote out the party next year.
He maintained that the PDP has what it takes to savage the country’s economy, which had suffered decay and urged Nigerians to vote the PDP in next year’s general election, assuring that the party would restore the country’s lost glory.
Umahi also condemned Police siege to the official residences of the Senate President, Bukola Saraki and his Deputy, Ike Ekweremmadu describing the development as undemocratic.
Meanwhile, the Southeast Youth Leader of the PDP, Chidiebere Egwu, condemned Tuesday’s siege to Ekweremmadu’s residence by security agencies.
Egwu, who spoke to journalists in Abakaliki, noted that the action was a humiliation and intimidation of the Igbo race by the presidency.
Describing the development as a shame to democracy, he stated that it was a threat to his (Ekwerenmadu’s) life, warning that if anything happens to the Deputy Senate President, the Igbo race would hold the presidency responsible.
Egwu further urged the international community, civil society groups and human rights activists to intervene and save Nigeria’s democracy from imminent collapse.
“Democracy has suffered major setbacks under the Buhari administration. The President has shown that he is incompetent to rule Nigeria. The travails of the Deputy Senate President further proves that Buhari hates the Igbo.
“Our security agencies have derailed in their constitutional responsibilities. They are now political tools in the hands of the Federal Government to witch hunt the opposition,” he added.
