Award-winning Nigerian singer and songwriter Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has shed light on the inspiration behind her song “Big Daddy.”

In a recent interview, the Afrobeats star revealed that Big Daddy is a feel-good record inspired by a real-life experience and a particular type of personality she has encountered.
According to Tems, the song reflects her observations of people who prioritize appearances over personal growth.

“Big Daddy was inspired by an experience of a type of person. I would describe the type of person as someone who wants to look cool but doesn’t work on themselves internally. It translates to wanting control without adding any value,” she explained.
Tems rose to global prominence after featuring on Wizkid’s 2020 hit single “Essence,” which later climbed to No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 following its remix with pop superstar Justin Bieber.
Since then, the singer has cemented her place on the world stage, earning prestigious accolades including Grammy Awards, American Music Awards, and BET Awards. She is currently signed to RCA Records in the United States and continues to be one of Nigeria’s most influential musical exports.
With Big Daddy, Tems once again blends honesty, emotion, and subtle social commentary—elements that have become trademarks of her artistry.
