Sowore Backs Aisha Yesufu’s 2027 Senate Bid, Faults Her Choice of Party

Activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has thrown his weight behind the 2027 senatorial ambition of fellow activist Aisha Yesufu, despite expressing reservations about her political party affiliation.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television on Monday, Sowore stressed that activists must actively participate in politics if meaningful change is to be achieved in society.

According to him, political engagement remains one of the strongest forms of activism. He said individuals with the passion and capacity to transform society should not stay away from governance and leadership.

Sowore openly endorsed Yesufu’s decision to contest the Federal Capital Territory senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections, expressing hope that she would emerge victorious. However, he maintained that she aligned with the wrong political platform and would have been better suited to join his own party.

“Yes, I support her totally. I’ve always believed that good people who want change should be involved in politics,” he said, adding that “politics is one of the biggest forms of activism needed to rescue society.”

Yesufu recently announced her resignation from the African Democratic Congress to join the Nigeria Democratic Congress, where she also declared her intention to run for the FCT senatorial seat.

Explaining her decision, Yesufu said her move was driven by a stronger political conviction and support for Peter Obi, whom she described as a symbol of hope for a better Nigeria.

She noted that her entry into the NDC was not merely as a member but as an active contender in the upcoming elections.

Yesufu also disclosed that she completed all her obligations within the ADC before making her exit to ensure a smooth transition.
