Sokoto Gov Approves 35% Subsidy on Motorcycles for Civil Servants at May Day Rally

Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State has approved the purchase of motorcycles for civil servants at a 35% subsidy, in a move aimed at easing transportation challenges and boosting worker morale.

The announcement was made during the 2026 May Day celebration held at Giginya Memorial Stadium in Sokoto, where the governor was represented by his deputy, Idris Mohammed Gobir. He explained that the initiative followed a formal request by the state chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC).

According to the governor, the subsidy is part of broader efforts to revitalise the state’s civil service and foster a more productive, motivated, and dignified workforce. He highlighted several other interventions introduced by his administration to support workers.

Aliyu also commended civil servants for their loyalty and urged them to remain punctual and committed to their responsibilities.

In his remarks, the Head of Service, Abdulkadir Ahmad, praised the strong working relationship between the state government and organised labour, noting that it has helped maintain industrial harmony. He further expressed gratitude to the government for restoring several benefits previously suspended.

Similarly, the Sokoto State NLC Chairman, Abdullahi Jungul, acknowledged the administration’s continued support for workers and pledged ongoing cooperation in achieving development goals.

However, Jungul called on the government to consider increasing pensions for retirees, pointing out that some still receive as little as ₦4,000 to ₦5,000 monthly. He also urged authorities to allocate housing units acquired from the Federal Government in the Kwannawa area to prevent deterioration.

The event’s highlight was the presentation of an award of appreciation to Governor Aliyu by the NLC in recognition of his administration’s commitment to workers’ welfare.
