Nigerian actress Shine Rosman has pushed back against the widespread perception that Nollywood actors enjoy lavish lifestyles, describing the belief as one of the industry’s biggest misconceptions.
Speaking during a podcast interview hosted by actor Baaj Adebule, Rosman revealed that many actors in the Nigerian film industry are battling financial challenges despite their public visibility and celebrity status.
According to her, only a handful of entertainers are financially stable through acting alone, while many others depend on side businesses and alternative income streams to survive.
“The most overrated misconception about Nollywood stars is that we have money. I don’t know why people assume we have money. Some of us do have money, but from other ventures. But many of us are struggling financially,” she said.
Her comments highlight the economic realities behind the glamour often associated with the entertainment industry. Many actors reportedly face long gaps between movie roles, resulting in unstable earnings and financial uncertainty.
For emerging and mid-level talents, the pressure to maintain a luxurious image on social media in order to attract endorsements and opportunities can further worsen financial strain.
Rosman’s remarks align with concerns previously raised by several Nollywood veterans, who have repeatedly pointed out that acting fees alone are rarely enough to sustain long-term financial success. While top actors with investments in production, endorsements, real estate, and other businesses have managed to build wealth, many others continue to struggle behind the scenes.
