Resident Doctors to Reassess Suspended Strike in Two Weeks — NARD

The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has announced that it will review developments surrounding the suspension of its proposed strike within the next two weeks.
The President-Elect of the association, Dr Emmanuel Idoko, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Calabar.
NARD had earlier embarked on an indefinite nationwide strike on November 1, 2025, over the Federal Government’s alleged failure to implement a 19-point agreement reached with the association. The industrial action was suspended after 29 days following negotiations that reportedly addressed some of the doctors’ demands.
However, the association later issued a notice of a fresh strike scheduled to begin on January 12, citing alleged non-implementation of agreements by the Federal Government.
According to Idoko, the decision to suspend the latest strike action followed a meeting with Vice President Kashim Shettima, who appealed to the doctors to halt further industrial action and continue dialogue with the government.
“The strike is not called off; it has only been put in abeyance,” Idoko said. “We will reassess the situation at our next meeting and determine the next line of action.”
He stressed that doctors do not embark on strikes lightly, noting that such actions are often a response to poor working conditions, inadequate medical facilities, and unfavourable policies that undermine effective healthcare delivery.
Idoko also lamented that poor remuneration and weak health sector policies have continued to fuel the migration of medical professionals out of the country, further straining Nigeria’s healthcare system.
