Human rights lawyer and political commentator Deji Adeyanju has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to immediately enforce the Supreme Court’s recent judgment on the Electoral Act.
In a statement issued on Monday, Adeyanju called on the commission to delete from its official portal the names of all candidates belonging to political parties affected by the ruling. He stressed that INEC is constitutionally bound to give full effect to the decision under Section 287(1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which requires every authority and person to obey Supreme Court judgments.
“The names of all candidates affected by the judgment should be removed from INEC’s official portal as part of the steps required to give effect to the Supreme Court’s decision,” Adeyanju said. He warned against selective or delayed compliance and insisted that the commission must take every necessary administrative step without further delay so that its records accurately reflect the court’s orders.
The call follows the seven-member Supreme Court panel’s unanimous decision that allowed INEC’s appeal and restored Sections 77(5), 77(7) and 84(2) of the Electoral Act 2026. Those provisions had earlier been struck down by the Court of Appeal.
Adeyanju maintained that strict adherence to the constitutional requirement for enforcement of Supreme Court decisions must guide INEC’s actions.
