Pascal Dozie, founder of Diamond Bank and ex-MTN Nigeria chairman, passes away at 85. Learn about his legacy and contributions to Nigeria’s economy
Pascal Dozie, the esteemed founder of the now-defunct Diamond Bank Plc and former chairman of MTN Nigeria, has passed away at the age of 85. He died in the early hours of Tuesday, as announced by his family.

His son, in a statement, conveyed the family’s sorrow and gratitude: “With deep sorrow, but with gratitude to God for a life well spent, we announce the passing of our beloved father, Pascal Gabriel Dozie, on 8th April 2025. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and a man of unwavering Catholic faith. His life was marked by service–to God, his family, and his country.”

The statement also noted that he is survived by his loving wife, Chinyere, his children, grandchildren, and all who were blessed to know him. “We thank God for the gift of his life and the legacy he leaves behind. May his soul rest in perfect peace,” the statement concluded.
Born on April 9, 1939, in Egbu, Owerri, Imo State, Pascal Dozie was a distinguished business leader with a notable academic background. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the London School of Economics and a Master’s degree in Administrative Science from the same institution.

Dozie founded Diamond Bank in 1990, which later merged with Access Bank. He also played a pivotal role in the launch of MTN Nigeria, serving as its pioneer chairman.
His contributions to the Nigerian financial and telecommunications sectors were significant, leaving a lasting impact on the country’s economic landscape. This Pascal Dozie death marks the end of an era.
He leaves behind his wife, Chinyere, and five children.
