The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, has reaffirmed that sports remain one of the most effective platforms for shaping discipline, resilience, and leadership qualities in young people.
He made the remarks on Thursday, April 16, at the 4th Biennial Inter-House Sports Competition of DE-Royal Apple Schools, held at the Agege Sports Stadium.
The colourful sporting event featured lawmakers including Hon. Noheem Adams, Hon. Ege Adebisi, Hon. Stephen Ogundipe, Hon. Jubril AbdulKareem, and Hon. Oladele Ajomale, whose presence added prestige to the occasion. Students competed in track events, relays, and novelty races, drawing cheers from a lively audience.

Obasa emphasized the importance of investing in grassroots youth development, urging parents and educators to support a balance between academics and athletics.

“When schools combine academics with sports, they produce well-rounded individuals capable of contributing meaningfully to society,” he said, encouraging continued support for initiatives that empower young people.
He also praised all participating students, stressing that effort mattered more than winning positions.
“Whether you come first or last, you are all winners because you had the courage to participate. The future belongs to those who are bold enough to try,” he added.
The Speaker commended the school’s management for successfully organizing the event, noting that such competitions require planning, resources, and dedication.
Also speaking, Mrs. B. T. Obasa, Managing Director of DE-Royal Apple Schools, said the event went beyond sports, describing it as a celebration of character development and future leadership.
“Our vision is to raise children who excel in both academics and character. Sports help instill discipline and teamwork, and we are proud to see our efforts recognized,” she said.
