The contest for the All Progressives Congress (APC) 2027 Ogun State governorship ticket has entered a new legal phase after aspirant Hon. Abayomi Hunye filed a suit at the Federal High Court in Abuja against the party’s primary winner, Senator Solomon Olamilekan Adeola, popularly known as Yayi.
Hunye is asking the court to scrutinise electoral documents Adeola allegedly submitted under oath to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in previous contests. The focus is on declarations relating to his state of origin.
His legal team has stressed that the suit does not challenge Adeola’s claim to be a Yewa indigene of Ogun State. Instead, it centres on whether earlier sworn statements are consistent with later records and whether they meet requirements of statutory integrity and constitutional compliance.
Lead counsel Olamide Victor said the court would be asked to determine what Adeola declared as his state of origin in previous INEC nomination forms, particularly those used during earlier contests in Lagos State. Certified true copies of the relevant records are expected to be tendered as evidence. The documents were not released publicly at the press briefing announcing the case.
Hunye said he was not inviting the media or the public to decide the matter. “I am not asking the media or the public to declare me the candidate. I am asking the judiciary to look at the process, examine the facts under the Electoral Act, and allow the law to take its proper course,” he stated.
The latest action adds to the already intense dispute over the APC primary held on 21 May, in which Adeola was declared the winner while Hunye was credited with zero votes—an outcome Hunye has also challenged in court.
Questions about Adeola’s origin have previously featured in public exchanges. The senator has rejected claims that he is originally from Ekiti State, describing them as false and demanding evidence. He has also threatened legal action against those making such allegations.
The suit now shifts the escalating political rivalry from public statements into the courtroom. The Federal High Court will determine whether any inconsistencies exist in the earlier INEC declarations and what legal consequences, if any, may follow.
