Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has been appointed Chairman of the Board of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), months after publicly declaring that he had no interest in serving in President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Fayose, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), had stated during an appearance on Politics Today on Channels Television on October 15, 2025, that he turned down an appointment offered by President Tinubu.
According to the former governor, he informed the President that he was not interested in taking up any position in the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government.
“Have you seen me taking an appointment from the APC? Asiwaju asked me, ‘What would we give you?’ I said, ‘Nothing, sir,'” Fayose had said.
He explained that after serving two terms as governor of Ekiti State, he preferred to stay out of public office.
“At 65, I’d rather be at home, being more responsible and doing other things that I need to do. I’ve served well. Two-time governor, I’ve done well. Tomorrow will hold itself,” he added.
Fayose also maintained that although he had a longstanding personal relationship with Tinubu, it did not amount to political affiliation.
“I’ve not been with the APC, but I’ve been Asiwaju’s friend and brother for a long time. That is the truth,” he said, stressing that his comments on national issues were based on conviction rather than a quest for political appointments.
However, in a surprising development, President Tinubu on Monday appointed Fayose as Chairman of the Board of the Rural Electrification Agency.
The appointment was announced by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, as part of 26 appointments into the boards of 10 federal government agencies and commissions.
According to the Presidency, all the appointments take immediate effect.
