Veteran journalist Dele Momodu dismisses Delta PDP’s mass defection to APC as a survival play, driven by fear of anti-graft agencies, not genuine political alignment
Veteran journalist and politician, Dele Momodu, has weighed in on the recent mass defection of top Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leaders in Delta State to the All Progressives Congress (APC), characterizing it as a “survival tactic” rather than a genuine shift in political ideology.

Speaking on Channels TV, Momodu argued that the move is driven by fear of harassment from anti-graft agencies and a desire for political protection.
Momodu stated, “What will surprise me is if President Bola Ahmed Tinubu believes that people are joining APC because they love him or because he’s doing so fantastically well.

What people are doing now is a game of survival.” He pointed to the history of Nigerian politics, which is “replete with stories of defections” and emphasized that the current government’s “carrot and stick” approach is forcing political alignments.
The defection, announced by Senator James Manager, includes Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, and numerous other key PDP figures.
Delta State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, cited the need for political alignment to sustain development as a reason for the move, with a formal public declaration scheduled for next week.
