June 12: Obasa Reaffirms Faith in Democracy, Renewed Hope Agenda, Calls for Peace in APC

Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa has reaffirmed his implicit confidence in Nigeria’s democratic odyssey and the impactful Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He also called for calm and rapprochement in the All Progressives Congress, APC, as Nigeria celebrates Democracy Day.

In a Democracy Day statement signed by Adeshina Oyetayo, his Special Adviser on Research, Media, and Documentation, Speaker Obasa says June 12 remains an epochal date in the annals of Nigeria because it symbolises the Nigerian people’s resilience and commitment to popular sovereignty.

“I extend warm congratulations to fellow citizens at home and in the Diaspora, and to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. Every June 12 remains a powerful reminder of the sacrifices of our heroes past and the enduring resilience of Nigerians in the defence of freedom, justice, and democratic values.

“This day commemorates the sacrifices of pro-democracy heroes. Twenty-seven years into our Fourth Republic, we reaffirm our unshakeable faith in democratic governance as the best path to national development and individual prosperity,” he said.

Speaker Obasa says Mr President’s personal journey and sacrifices for the enthronement of democracy in Nigeria inform his audacious leadership in steering the nation through economic reforms, global economic headwinds, and inherited structural challenges.

“Under the Renewed Hope Agenda of Mr. President, our nation continues to make steady strides towards economic renewal, improved governance, and national unity. It now behoves us all to continue supporting the Renewed Hope Agenda through which the President is building a more robust economy where enterprise can thrive, opportunities are expanded, and the dividends of democracy reach every corner of Nigeria.”

The Speaker further urged members of the APC, particularly in Lagos, to embrace calm and reconciliation in the aftermath of its primaries, which had sparked protests in parts of Lagos and other areas over alleged imposition of candidates and irregularities.

“Party primaries are contests, not wars,” he said. Therefore, “We must prioritise internal cohesion, dialogue, and mutual respect. Let us resolve differences through democratic means, strengthen our structures, and remain focused on delivering good governance to Nigerians. A united APC will not only consolidate democratic gains but also position the party to continue driving national progress and stability.”

“Our focus must remain on the bigger picture, which is consolidating power in 2027 to continue the transformative work President Tinubu has begun.” Speaker Obasa concluded.
