Dangote petrol price reduction announced as refinery cuts PMS ex-depot price again, easing costs and providing relief for Nigerians facing inflation

Dangote petrol price reduction is once again making headlines, bringing much-needed relief to Nigerians. In a move hailed as both timely and strategic, the Dangote Petroleum Refinery has reduced the ex-depot price of Premium Motor Spirit from N840 to N820 per litre.

The announcement was made via the refinery’s official X account on Tuesday, 8 July 2025, and takes effect immediately.

This marks the second such reduction in just nine days. On 1 July, the ex-depot price had dropped from N880 to N840 after briefly rising in late June.

Such frequent adjustments signal the refinery’s commitment to fuel price stability amid ongoing economic pressures.

Nigerians have long struggled with inflation and currency devaluation, both of which have worsened living conditions across the country.

“This is not just about numbers on a pump. It’s about real people feeling less burdened at the end of each day,” said financial analyst David Obinna.

His sentiment echoes the feelings of many who depend on petrol for daily activities, from commuting to powering generators and running small businesses.

The new pricing is designed to benefit marketers by lowering the cost of fuel procurement, which may soon translate into reduced retail pump prices.

While fuel stations are independently operated, industry insiders suggest that the ex-depot cuts often trickle down to the end-user.

The refinery’s bold move positions it as more than just a commercial entity. It is increasingly seen as a stabilising force in Nigeria’s volatile energy landscape.

By proactively managing prices, it supports millions of Nigerians whose incomes are stretched thin.

Behind the scenes, this approach aligns with the Dangote Group’s broader economic vision. Launched in 2023, the Dangote Petroleum Refinery in Lagos is Africa’s largest single-train facility, capable of processing 650,000 barrels of crude oil daily.

The ambition has always been clear: to help Nigeria become self-sufficient in refined petroleum production.

Historically, Nigeria has exported crude oil but imported most of its refined fuel. This imbalance has made the country vulnerable to global price shocks, supply chain disruptions, and foreign exchange costs.

With the Dangote Refinery now in full operation, the expectation is a major transformation in how Nigeria sources and distributes fuel.

By reducing the ex-depot price twice in such quick succession, the refinery not only responds to global oil price fluctuations but also anticipates public expectations.

The gesture reflects an understanding that fuel affordability is central to national stability. In a country where electricity is unreliable and alternatives are expensive, petrol plays a critical role in daily life.

Moreover, the pricing strategy showcases the refinery’s potential to influence regional energy markets. As production ramps up, it could supply neighbouring countries, adding another layer of economic impact. But for now, the focus remains firmly on Nigerian consumers.

“Dangote has made a strong statement with this move,” said Abuja-based economist Teniola Akinwale. “It tells us that large-scale private investment can have a direct and positive influence on public welfare.”

For now, all eyes are on whether fuel stations will reflect this reduction at the pump and how long the current pricing trend will hold.

Still, the public reaction has been largely positive, with many seeing this as a rare example of corporate responsiveness in a time of need.
