Popular skit maker and streamer Shank Comics has stirred controversy after asserting that top Nigerian comedians Bovi Ugboma and Basketmouth are wealthier than leading Afrobeats stars such as Wizkid and Asake.
Speaking during a recent livestream, Shank argued that comedians tend to prioritise long-term financial stability over extravagant spending, which, according to him, contributes to their overall wealth.
“I feel like comedy money is more. I can swear to God, Bovi, Basketmouth, they’re richer than Asake,” he said.
Shank further suggested that comedians often live more modest lifestyles compared to musicians, who are known for flaunting luxury assets such as expensive cars and designer items.
Using Bovi as an example, he noted that the comedian is less interested in high-end automobiles and luxury displays, unlike some music stars.
He also referenced the lavish spending habits often associated with artists like Burna Boy, questioning the necessity of splurging on exotic cars such as Ferraris, Lamborghinis, and Cybertrucks.
The remarks have since sparked debate on social media, with fans and industry watchers divided over comparisons between the earning power of comedians and musicians in Nigeria’s entertainment landscape.
