Cooking Gas Hits ₦1,300/kg in Lagos as Prices Jump 8.3%

The price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, has risen to about ₦1,300 per kilogramme in Lagos, marking an 8.3 per cent increase from the ₦1,200 recorded in August 2026.

Market checks in the city show that prices vary by outlet. Accredited gas plants currently sell a kilogramme for around ₦1,300, while some smaller plants charge between ₦1,350 and ₦1,400 depending on location. Dealers report that prices are even higher in several other parts of the country.

Inyang Edu, National President of the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers, attributed the rise to a combination of factors rather than any single cause. He pointed to global geopolitical tensions, including the conflict involving the United States and Iran, which have heightened volatility in international energy markets.

“For Nigeria, the effect is transmitted through several channels: international energy prices, shipping and insurance costs, foreign-exchange exposure, domestic logistics and, most importantly for LPG, the availability and cost of supply into the domestic market,” Edu said.

He explained that the higher replacement cost at the depot level forces marketers to adjust retail prices to avoid losses. Transportation, loading, financing, plant operations, personnel and maintenance costs must all be recovered before the product reaches consumers.

Edu stressed that the increase is particularly painful because cooking gas is no longer a luxury. Millions of Nigerian households, restaurants, bakeries, food vendors, schools and hotels now rely on LPG. When it becomes unaffordable, some families reduce consumption or return to firewood and charcoal, undermining the country’s clean-cooking goals and raising environmental and public-health concerns.

He recalled that the domestic market has faced structural supply challenges. In June 2026, the Nigeria Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) reported a year-to-date LPG supply deficit of about 91,966 metric tonnes.

Depot prices remain fluid. As of September 16, 2026, 20 metric tonnes of LPG in the Lagos market were trading between ₦20 million and ₦22.7 million, depending on the supplier and location. Market listings showed approximately ₦22 million at Ardova, ₦22.7 million at Stockgap and about ₦20 million at Panocean, with some other offers ranging from ₦19.9 million to ₦20.3 million.

Edu noted that depot prices can change frequently based on product availability, source of supply, logistics and commercial arrangements between suppliers and buyers.
