FC Barcelona must develop stronger leadership on the pitch if they are to realize their UEFA Champions League ambitions, head coach Hansi Flick has said.
Speaking on Tuesday, the 61-year-old reflected on another European disappointment after his side was knocked out in the quarter-finals by Atletico Madrid — marking a second consecutive season falling short of continental glory. Last year, Barcelona’s campaign ended in the semi-finals against Inter Milan.
Despite their struggles in Europe, Barcelona remain dominant domestically. Flick guided the team to a league and cup double last season, and they are currently on course to defend their La Liga title, sitting nine points clear of Real Madridwith seven matches remaining.
However, the German coach pointed to a lack of experienced leaders during crucial moments as a key weakness.
“It is not an excuse, but at this stage of the season, having all players available is vital,” Flick said ahead of their clash with Celta Vigo.
Barcelona were without key figures Frenkie de Jong and Raphinha in their defeat to Atletico — absences Flick believes were strongly felt. He also highlighted the leadership previously provided by Inigo Martinez.
“We need players who can lead on the pitch, especially in decisive Champions League matches, to guide the team and make their presence felt,” he added.
Flick acknowledged that Barcelona’s squad, heavily built around academy graduates, is still developing and must grow through setbacks.
“This is a young team that must learn from every defeat,” he said. “We have the potential for a great future, but we must make the right decisions — particularly in the transfer market.”
While he declined to reveal specific transfer targets, Flick hinted at possible reinforcements in attack and expressed hope of extending his stay at the club, describing the role as what he expects to be his final job in football.
