The Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has ordered the immediate disruption of any unlawful gatherings, particularly those linked to the Neo-Black Movement of Africa, to prevent public disorder.

The command’s intelligence reports and community tips revealed that the group intended to hold a meeting and initiation on Monday, which could trigger clashes and reprisals among rival cult factions.

In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the commissioner directed police operatives to adopt a more offensive strategy, especially in areas with a high student population.

“This follows the security intelligence-led policing and community information that suggests that the Neo-Black Movement of Africa may use today, 7th of July 2025, to execute plans that could lead to serious public disorder,” the statement said.

CP Orutugu also activated the School Protection Squad initiative, deploying officers to monitor and secure institutions, especially those known for past cult-related incidents.

He warned hotel owners, lounge operators, and bar managers not to allow their premises to be used for illegal gatherings or initiation events. According to the police, facilities found to be hosting such meetings may face sanctions.

“We are on alert across student zones, parks, and identified hot spots. The public must stay vigilant and report any suspicious movements or events,” Ikenga added.

The Anambra police clampdown also includes covert patrols in commercial hubs, with officers stationed at motor parks and high-traffic areas.

The School Protection Squad was launched by the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, to safeguard students and educational infrastructure across the country.

In Anambra, this measure is being enforced to prevent cult-related violence, often seen during initiation periods.

The police reiterated their commitment to maintaining public peace and urged residents to contact their area DPOs or command hotlines if they witness any suspicious behaviour.
