Peter Obi condemns Oko attack as a tragic assault on learning and a painful reminder of Nigeria’s worsening security situation.

The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party made the remarks following the violent attack on Thursday night near the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, in Anambra State.
Unidentified gunmen reportedly stormed the Oko community in Orumba North Local Government Area, killing at least four people believed to be students, injuring others, and abducting members of staff from the institution.

While eyewitnesses gave chilling accounts of unprovoked gunfire, the Anambra State Police Command confirmed two deaths and suggested a link to cult-related violence.
In a statement posted on X, formerly Twitter, Obi expressed his deep sadness over the incident. “I am deeply saddened by the tragic attack on the learning environment of the Oko community in Anambra State, near the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, which reportedly claimed some lives and left several others injured,” he wrote.

He noted that beyond the loss of lives and injuries, the abduction of academic staff members signalled a disturbing trend in which places of learning are no longer safe.
“It is disheartening that educational institutions, places meant for learning, growth, and safety, are now targets of such violence,” Obi stated.
He stressed the need for the federal government and security agencies to act quickly. “We must, as a matter of urgency, make the safety of our citizens a priority, especially the youth and educators who play a vital role in shaping our future,” h
e said. Obi urged that the perpetrators must be arrested and the kidnapped victims rescued without delay.
The former governor of Anambra extended his condolences to the bereaved families and expressed support for those injured and traumatised by the event.
“My heartfelt condolences go to the families of the deceased, and my thoughts are with the injured and the entire Oko community during this difficult time,” he said.
He also expressed solidarity with the students and staff of Federal Polytechnic, Oko, who must now cope with the aftermath of the traumatic incident.
“I also stand in solidarity with the students and staff… who must now cope with the trauma of this violent disruption to their lives and academic pursuits,” Obi wrote.
Calling for urgent reforms in the country’s approach to public safety, Obi concluded, “This tragedy underscores the urgent need for a more proactive and people-focused approach to security.
May the souls of the departed rest in peace, and may God grant comfort to their families and healing to all who have been affected.”

The Anambra Police Command confirmed that security personnel had taken control of the area and rescued at least two victims, including a female survivor now receiving medical attention.
