Ex-CBN Governor Emefiele’s Trial: EFCC Admits Media Reports as Evidence

Abuja, May 11, 2026 – The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) yesterday presented newspaper publications as part of evidence in the ongoing trial of former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele.

Emefiele is facing a four-count charge before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Maitama, relating to alleged disobedience to lawful directives and actions causing public harm.

During proceedings, EFCC’s prosecuting counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), submitted copies of Punch, ThisDay, Vanguard, Daily Sun, and The Nation newspapers through the prosecution’s eighth witness, Jegede Oluwasegun, an official from the National Library of Nigeria. Certification receipts from the National Library accompanied the submissions.

The defence, led by Olalekan Ojo (SAN), did not raise objections, leading the court to formally admit the newspapers into evidence.

Under cross-examination, Oluwasegun clarified that he did not author the newspaper content, stating:
“What I do is to certify the newspapers. I cannot 100 per cent say the content of the papers is right; I am not the author.”

The next hearing in the case has been scheduled for May 13, 2026, before Justice Maryanne Anenih.
