A renowned legal luminary and septuagenarian, Adebayo Oba Adelodun, has commended the steady progress of Nigeria’s legal system, describing it as one that has “evolved to an enviable height” over the years.
Adelodun, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), made the remarks in Ilorin during the public presentation of a book titled “Adebayo Oba Adelodun: A Life of Advocacy and Leadership at the Bar.” The event, organised by friends and associates, marked his 20th anniversary at the Inner Bar.
Reflecting on the journey of the nation’s judiciary, the legal icon noted that Nigeria has significantly reduced its dependence on foreign legal precedents. According to him, the system has matured into a more self-reliant structure capable of addressing local challenges.

“Gone are the days when we relied heavily on foreign cases and laws to navigate legal hurdles. We have become more homegrown,” he said.
Despite the progress, Adelodun maintained that there remains ample room for improvement, stressing that no system is beyond refinement. “Though we are doing well, there is always room for improvement because nothing is permanent,” he added.
On a personal note, the elder statesman revealed that his next ambition is to devote more time to spiritual pursuits. “At over 70 years old, my desire now is to be closer to Almighty Allah, my creator,” he said.
In his remarks, the Emir of Ilorin, Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, represented by Yusuf Ali, described Adelodun as a distinguished son of Ilorin and a role model to many.
Also paying tribute, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abdulateef Fagbemi, praised Adelodun as a shining figure of his generation.
Chairman of the occasion, Wole Olanipekun, further lauded the celebrant as a dependable ally whose professional excellence and integrity have endeared him to colleagues and admirers alike.
