ABOUT K1 DE ULTIMATE
Olasunkanmi Wasiu Ayinde Marshal alias K1 De Ultimate was born in Agarawu, Lagos, Nigeria on March 3, 1957. He discovered his passion for music at the tender age of 8 and began pursing it although his parents initially opposed. By the time he was 15 he had won various musical competitions and became an instrument packer for his Fuji Music Mentor, Sikiru Ayinde Barrister.
In 1979, Marshal independently released his first album ‘Abode Mecca’. He instantly became a force to recon with and was picked up by Baba Laje Records. Since then he continued to wax stronger as he recreated Fuji by including the sounds of keyboards, saxophones and guitars with an up-tempo rhythm which was atypical to the genre. Furthermore, initially Fuji only appealed to Muslims as it stems from the Islamic genre Were. Yet with his kind of Fuji those of various religious and nonreligious sectors fell in love with the genre.
Marshal continued to recreate the genre by giving birth to Western Fuji, Modern Fuji, Classical Fuji, Mature Fuji and Fuji Step-up. Along with each reincarnation of Fuji, he also rebranded his name hence Alhaji Wasiu Ayinde Barrister, Alhaji Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, Kwam 1, and finally K1 De Ultimate.
In his daily goal of globalizing the genre, he remains the only Fuji Musician to perform at the World of Music Art & Dance in the United Kingdom, Troxy in United Kingdom, World of Music Exposition in Netherlands, Sounds of Brazil (S.O.B’s) in New York along with touring other parts of the world.
Even after over 40 years in the music industry, Fuji remains incomplete without K1 De Ultimate. His legendary achievement as an Indigenous Music Icon will never be forgotten as he continues to cut across various generations, classes, tribes, and events.
