“You Chose Humanity Over Luxury” – GTBank Co-Founder Commends Senator Abiru’s Youth Empowerment Drive

The co-founder of Guaranty Trust Bank, Mr. Fola Adeola, has described the SAIL Empowerment Foundation established by Senator Mukhail Adetokunbo Abiru and his wife, Mrs. Feyisola Abiru, as a “worthy legacy” rooted in service, selflessness and commitment to humanity.

Adeola made the remarks on Wednesday during a visit to the SAIL Innovation Lab in Ikorodu, Lagos, where he inspected the facility and engaged with young beneficiaries of its programmes.

The veteran banker and philanthropist said the Abirus’ decision to invest resources in empowering young people beyond their immediate family reflected a rare understanding of lasting legacy.

“Whenever we decide to commit to causes bigger than ourselves, we are building a legacy. What you are doing is for children whose parents you may not even know. For society to survive, we must care for others, particularly the less privileged,” Adeola stated.

He noted that the funds channelled into the initiative could easily have supported a life of personal luxury, yet the couple prioritised service to humanity.

“The money used for this great cause could have been used to service a luxurious lifestyle, but you chose service and humanity above self. This is a useful endeavour,” he said.

Adeola urged beneficiaries at the lab to maximise the opportunities available, describing residents of the community as fortunate to have such a facility in their midst.

“Neighbours and those living around here are indeed fortunate. I hope they will maximise the great opportunities here,” he added.

Drawing from his own experience, Adeola recalled founding the FATE Foundation in 2000 to support aspiring entrepreneurs and promote enterprise development. He characterised philanthropy as a noble but understated ecosystem whose impact endures.

“It is a world of charity, a completely noble cause. It is a completely different ecosystem that is not ‘sexy’. Beneficiaries will always remember the pathway,” he said.

Expressing satisfaction with what he witnessed, Adeola remarked: “I am glad I came here. I should have come here with my son and wife to witness this remarkable feat. May your kindness count for you.”

Addressing the young participants, Adeola shared his personal journey from humble beginnings. He recalled hawking goods on the streets as a nine-year-old after his mother placed a tray on his head—an experience that instilled resilience and determination.

He encouraged the beneficiaries not to yield to life’s challenges but to discover and develop their talents, stressing that successful people distinguish themselves through discipline, determination and the effective use of opportunities rather than any special advantage.

In his response, Senator Abiru described Adeola as his boss, mentor and a major influence on both his professional career and public service.

Abiru noted that he began his banking career at Guaranty Trust Bank under Adeola’s guidance, spending a decade at the institution and absorbing lessons that continue to shape his leadership.

“This inspiration you see here today was learnt from him. He is my pillar of inspiration, my mentor and guardian, even in public service,” Abiru said.
