Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has emphasised the critical role women play in shaping the nation’s development, declaring that they hold a powerful position to drive meaningful change.
She made the remarks in Abuja during a massive 10-million women rally and empowerment programme organised by the Minister of Women Affairs, Iman Suleiman.
The event, held at the MKO Abiola National Stadium, drew women from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, creating a vibrant, carnival-like atmosphere. Among those present were governors’ wives, female deputy governors, ministers, and heads of government agencies.

Describing the gathering as historic, the First Lady said it evoked memories of Laila Dogonyaro, a late northern activist known for championing girl-child education and women’s empowerment.
Tinubu praised the unity displayed at the rally, stressing that women, who make up over half of Nigeria’s population, must come together to address issues affecting them and the nation at large.

“When women are empowered, they can make informed decisions about their lives, which ultimately strengthens families and communities,” she said.
She highlighted the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that it prioritises women’s inclusion in governance and ensures their voices are heard in decision-making processes.
The First Lady also expressed appreciation to Nigerian women for their continued support of the administration, assuring them that ongoing reforms would yield positive outcomes in the years ahead.
During the event, she received a women’s charter from the Minister of Women Affairs and pledged to present it to the President.
In her address, Suleiman said Nigerian women are experiencing unprecedented recognition and support under the current administration. She noted that this has strengthened their resolve to mobilise politically and support President Tinubu’s future ambitions.
She described the women’s charter as a “social contract” reflecting the collective aspirations of Nigerian women, calling for greater political inclusion, increased representation, and enhanced financial support for women-focused initiatives.
Suleiman added that the movement would expand nationwide, empowering women across states and regions while consolidating their role in shaping Nigeria’s future.
