The U.S. has pledged continued support for Nigeria’s economic reforms, focusing on agriculture, health, and technology for sustainable growth.

The United States has reiterated its commitment to supporting Nigeria’s sustainable development through strategic economic reforms and collaborative efforts across critical sectors.

This was the central theme of a keynote address delivered on behalf of U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard M. Mills, at the 2024 Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Alumni Association Nigeria (HHHFAAN) Annual Seminar, held in Abuja on Thursday.

Represented by Public Diplomacy Counselor Lee McManis, the Ambassador emphasised the pivotal role of targeted reforms in driving productivity and improving livelihoods in Nigeria.

Speaking on the seminar’s theme, ‘Redirecting Economic Reforms to Scale Productivity and Improve Livelihoods in Nigeria,’ McManis highlighted agriculture, health, and technology as key areas requiring immediate attention to unlock the country’s growth potential.

McManis described economic reforms as the foundation for sustainable development, stressing their importance in fostering a thriving business environment, attracting investments, and nurturing innovation.

“Realising Nigeria’s potential requires strategic reforms and concerted efforts to enhance productivity and improve the livelihoods of its citizens,” McManis stated.

He cited modern farming techniques, improved market access, and value addition as transformative policies that could boost productivity and ensure food security for millions of Nigerians.

While acknowledging the country’s current challenges, McManis assured attendees of the U.S. government’s unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s progress.

“The United States remains committed to supporting Nigeria in its quest for sustainable economic development by improving the business environment and enhancing the ease of doing business,” he said.

HHHFAAN President Abosede Oyeleye, also the founder of the Children Emergency Relief Foundation, spoke passionately about the organisation’s dedication to societal development.

Addressing issues such as power, security, and agriculture, Oyeleye underscored the urgent need for reforms to alleviate poverty and improve the quality of life for Nigerians.

“For me, there are three key areas the government should look at. One is agriculture. If the government will subsidise inputs for farmers, it will help reduce the high cost of food,” Oyeleye said.

“Secondly, power is critical. The National Grid has collapsed multiple times this year, and consistent, affordable electricity is essential for progress. Thirdly, security and the rule of law must be established to ensure Nigeria becomes a better place.”

The seminar also featured a presentation by Olusegun Onigbinde, co-founder and Director of BudgIT, and a robust panel discussion with experts from various fields.

Panellists explored solutions to Nigeria’s economic and social challenges, offering actionable insights on fostering inclusive growth.

Through its mission in Nigeria, the U.S. continues to engage in collaborative projects across sectors such as agriculture, energy, health, and education.

These efforts aim to bolster inclusive growth and foster sustainable development, reflecting a long-term partnership between the two nations.

As the HHHFAAN seminar concluded, the reaffirmed commitment from the U.S. underscored the importance of global partnerships in addressing Nigeria’s developmental challenges and unlocking its vast potential.
