Traffic Robbers: How to stay safe in Lagos

The report of incidences of robbery while in traffic is a source of worry to the Lagos State Police Command. Some of the major hot spots according to the numbers of complaints so far received through RRS social media platforms (Facebook and Twitter) and sms to our complaint line (09053950347)are: Oshodi, Mile 2, Apongbon and CMS. There are also isolated instances in some other areas.
More disturbing is that we are in that period of the year when there would be ceaseless movement of people in and around the city. While the crime rate in the metropolis has been on tremendous decline in the past few months, robbery in traffic hold-up in some of these affected areas are a source of concern to the acting Commissioner of Police, Mr Imohimi Edgal.
It was on these grounds that Mr. Edgal ordered a renewed clampdown on the traffic robbers in Lagos.
Before now, Rapid Response Squad had made ceaseless arrests in Oshodi, Mile 2 and CMS. Apart from these arrests, it equally created pin – down points in these hot spots.
Traffic robbers in some of these bad spots target vehicle occupants, who are busy with their phones while held in traffic. They are mostly attracted to phone lights in vehicles. They monitor well before confronting the vehicle occupants mostly at night.
Equally of target to these miscreants too, are lone occupants of vehicles. They can also go after passers-by in desolate areas.
Presently, based on our investigations and testimonies from those arrested, we wish to advice that:

  1. While in traffic, don’t display your personal effects like jewelleries, mobile phones, laptops, hand bags etc.

  2. Roll up your side glasses when you need to receive or make phone calls.

  3. Don’t be distracted by miscreants pointing at your tyres or banging on the body of your vehicle.

  4. Report the incident immediately at the nearest RRS stand point in the area.
