In a revealing interview with Katy Igwe, the award-winning singer and performer shared that her tattoo was not just an aesthetic decision—it was an emotional response to heartbreak.

“I did that from the pain I felt from a heartbreak. I just wanted to do something to scream,” Tiwa said, reflecting on her emotional state during the experience.
The vocalist disclosed that the breakup, which occurred two years ago, left her devastated and searching for a way to release the pain. For Tiwa, that outlet became ink on skin.

Wanting to be in a safe and private environment, the veteran songstress flew her tattoo artist from Los Angeles to Nigeria and had the session done in her own room.
“I flew in my tattoo artist from LA to Nigeria. And I did it in my room… I wanted to make sure that I was in a comfortable place,” she explained.
However, the process wasn’t easy. Tiwa described the session as bloody and intense, to the point that her tattoo artist became visibly concerned.
“He started to tattoo my body; there was blood everywhere… He was more concerned for me like, ‘What are you trying to do?’” she recalled.
While she didn’t name the person involved in the relationship, Tiwa made it clear that the period was one of the most emotionally challenging times of her life.
“Last two years was a very hard time. The relationship I experienced was crazy. I’m so happy I’m out of that relationship,” she added with relief.
Fans have since praised the singer for her vulnerability, with many relating to the way heartbreak can push people to find creative, even painful, forms of emotional expression.
