Set-Piece Kings! Arsenal Sink 10-Man Chelsea to Stay Five Points Clear Focus Keyphrase: Arsenal beat Chelsea 2-1

Premier League leaders Arsenal once again flexed their set-piece muscle as Jurrien Timber’s decisive header secured a gritty 2-1 victory over 10-man Chelsea in a pulsating London derby on Sunday.

In a contest that highlighted the growing influence of dead-ball situations in the Premier League, all three goals at the Emirates Stadium stemmed from corners  with Arsenal ultimately winning the battle that mattered most.

Saliba Strikes, Chelsea Respond
William Saliba handed the hosts the advantage in the first half, bundling home his first goal since December 2024 after a well-worked corner routine orchestrated by set-piece coach Nicolas Jover.

Chelsea, however, found their reply just before the break. A dangerous inswinger from captain Reece James forced pressure in the Arsenal box, with Piero Hincapie inadvertently turning the ball into his own net.

With tensions rising in the second half, Jurrien Timber timed his run to perfection in the 66th minute, powering home a header from Declan Rice’s corner to restore Arsenal’s lead.

Chelsea’s protests for a foul on goalkeeper Robert Sanchez were waved away, and their afternoon unravelled further when winger Pedro Neto was sent off for a second booking after a rash challenge on Gabriel Martinelli.

Despite late pressure, including a stoppage-time effort from Alejandro Garnacho that forced a sharp save from David Raya, Arsenal held firm.

The win reestablished Arsenal’s five-point cushion over second-placed Manchester City, who have a game in hand after trimming the gap with a victory at Leeds.

Under Mikel Arteta, the Gunners appear to have rediscovered their edge following recent criticism over their mentality. After last week’s emphatic win over Tottenham, this hard-fought derby triumph could prove equally significant in their pursuit of a first league title since 2004.

With nine matches remaining, Arsenal travel to Brighton next, knowing a potentially decisive showdown with Manchester City looms on April 18.

For Chelsea, now winless in three matches, the defeat dents their hopes of securing Champions League qualification and leaves manager Liam Rosenior searching for answers after another setback against their London rivals.
