The Inspector General of Police Ibrahim Idris and and men of the IGP Monitoring Unit have been dragged before a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos over alleged invasion, unlawful arrests and detention of the residents.

Vanguard reports that the defendants were dragged before the court by residents of Millennium Citi Centre Estate in Gbagada.

We gathered that the residents are demanding N250 million as damages from the defendants.

The estate’s chairman, Soji Adeniji; its chief security officer, William Iyeke; a resident, Julius Babasola, and the registered trustees of Millenium Citi Centre Estate, are the plaintiffs in the suit.

The defendants include Titi Ashamu, Tunde Ashamu, attorney to the Emmanuel Oyedele Ashamu family, Amodu Fatai, the IGP, and members of the IGP Monitoring Unit, ACP Aliyu Abubakar, ASP Aminu Sokoto and ASP Sunday Daramola, are the defendants in the suit.

An invitation was said to have been sent to Adeniji by the IGP Unit, asking him to report to the IGP’s Abuja office on September 25.

Iyeke and Babasola were said to have been arrested and detained at the IGP’s office at Louis Edet House, Abuja, by men of the Monitoring Unit.

The plaintiffs want the court to declare the action illegal, oppressive, unconstitutional, null and void. They also prayed the court to grant a perpetual injunction restraining the defendants, jointly and severally from threatening or proceeding against them in any manner.

According to report, they were arrested over a dispute as to the ownership of land on which their properties in the estate are located.

Meanwhile, we previously reported that a Lagos-based legal practitioner instituted a legal action against the inspector general of police, Ibrahim Kpotun Idris.

The lawyer, Barrister Ademola Odusote, is the advocacy officer of Lawyers Integrity Crusade Network.

The Nigeria Police Force and the attorney general of the federation, Abubakar Malami (SAN), were also joined in the suit.

In an originating summon dated Monday, November 20, 2017, filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday, November 22, the lawyer sought an order of the court, compelling IGP Idris “to do equity by forthwith obeying and enforcing all subsisting court judgements won against the police.”
