Court reserves sentencing as Nigeria intensifies crackdown on railway vandalism, with arrests and investigations ongoing in Kano, Ilorin, and Gombe

Railway vandalism in Nigeria has triggered a nationwide crackdown as law enforcement intensifies operations against those damaging critical transport infrastructure.

In Kano, the Chief Magistrate Court No. 9 in Gyadi-Gyadi has reserved judgment in a high-profile vandalism case until 1 July 2025.

Four accused persons Mukhter Muhammed, Abdullahi Musa, Sa’idu Yushe’u, and Salisu Shuaibu were arraigned on 19 June after being arrested for vandalising rail lines in Zakirai town, Gabasawa Local Government Area.

The Kano Railway Police Command charged them with conspiracy, mischief, and theft. All four pleaded guilty and were convicted immediately.

However, sentencing was delayed to allow a review of the exhibits recovered from the scene.

While Kano awaits the court’s decision, police forces across Nigeria have ramped up their investigations into similar crimes.

In Ilorin, Kwara State, the railway command is probing the theft of key railway components, including 56 fish plates, bolts, and nuts, reported stolen near Idi-Ose Village on 11 June.

Prompt action led to the arrest of Wasiu Musa from Ajia Village the following day. Musa admitted guilt and implicated an accomplice, Abdullahi Salman, who remains on the run.

The police made further headway on 28 June by arresting Usman Bashir of You Area, Ilorin. Officers recovered a large cache of stolen materials including fish plates, AB & K fasteners, and nuts during the operation.

Inspector Oniwara Babatunde, leading the investigation, confirmed that suspects are cooperating and helping to trace others involved.

In Gombe State, another railway-related incident emerged as two suspects were arrested for transporting stolen steel rail sleepers. Police have since launched a full inquiry.

Responding to the attacks, the Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, issued a stern warning to offenders.

He condemned the escalating sabotage of national infrastructure and pledged that the corporation would pursue justice.

“These acts not only endanger lives but also undermine national development. We will ensure that perpetrators are prosecuted to the fullest extent,” he said.

Railway vandalism has become an increasing concern for authorities, threatening safety and undermining efforts to modernise Nigeria’s transport network.

With arrests made in multiple states, the government appears committed to enforcing security and holding vandals accountable.

As investigations deepen and trials proceed, the message from the authorities is clear: railway infrastructure must not be tampered with, and offenders will be made to face the consequences of their actions.
