The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Lagos State Council, has honoured the Chairman of Agege Local Government, Abdul-Ganiyu Obasa, as the Media Games Ambassador ahead of the 2026 NUJ Media Games scheduled to take place from October 5 to October 10 at the Agege Stadium in Lagos.

Presenting the honour, NUJ Lagos State Council Chairman, Adeleye Ajayi, said Obasa was selected in recognition of his leadership and commitment to grassroots development, particularly through sports.

Ajayi commended the council chairman for implementing people-centred policies, investing in community infrastructure and promoting initiatives that have improved the welfare of residents.

He noted that Obasa’s sustained investment in grassroots sports has provided opportunities for youth engagement, talent discovery, healthy living and community unity.

According to Ajayi, the Media Games Ambassador recognition is reserved for individuals whose contributions to sports development and community advancement align with the objectives of the NUJ Media Games.

Responding, Obasa expressed appreciation to the union for the recognition, describing journalists as essential partners in promoting accountability and publicising government activities.

He thanked members of the media for their role in informing the public about government programmes and pledged to continue supporting initiatives that promote youth development through sports.

Obasa reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to using sports as a platform for youth empowerment and economic growth, noting that sporting activities create employment opportunities and contribute to national development.

He added that the local government has sustained youth-focused programmes, including the Obasa Games and the Obasa Summer Games, over the past four years to keep young people positively engaged.

The council chairman also assured the NUJ of the local government’s full support for the 2026 Media Games, confirming that the Agege Stadium would be available for the tournament.

He further announced that the council would inaugurate its maiden Lagos Mini Football League on July 31, describing it as the first competition of its kind in Lagos State.

The event concluded with the presentation of a customised NUJ Media Games jersey and face cap to Obasa by the NUJ Lagos State Council.
