Veteran actor Oludotun Baiyewunmi Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has died at the age of 84.
His family announced the news in a joint Instagram statement on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, signed by his son, Olusoji Jacobs, and his wife, acclaimed actress Joke Silva.
“It is with gratitude to God for a life well lived and fought, that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and uncle. The Lion of Lufodo. Oludotun Baiyewunmi Jacobs (MFR) 11/07/1942 – 16/09/2026,” the statement read.
The family appealed to bloggers and social media influencers to respect their privacy during this period.
Born on July 11, 1942, Olu Jacobs was widely regarded as one of the founding fathers of modern Nigerian acting. His career spanned more than five decades across stage, television and film in both Nigeria and the United Kingdom, establishing him as a defining presence in the industry.
Together with his wife, Joke Silva, he co-founded the Lufodo Group and the Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts, institutions that mentored generations of actors.
Renowned for his commanding baritone voice and regal screen presence, Jacobs appeared in hundreds of productions, including The Dogs of War, Vigilante, Omeruah’s Advice, Blood Diamond and Dry.
In 2007, he was conferred with the Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the arts.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.
Olu Jacobs is survived by his wife, Joke Silva, their children and grandchildren.
