The Nigerian media industry has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of veteran journalist and publisher of The Eagle Online, Dotun Oladipo, at the age of 56.
Oladipo reportedly died on Tuesday evening, August 25, 2026, after he suddenly took ill in Lagos.
His death has sent shockwaves across the journalism community, particularly among members of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP), where he previously served as president.
According to close associates, Oladipo was active earlier in the day and carried out his usual professional engagements before he suddenly fell ill at his office.
He was subsequently taken for medical attention but reportedly died shortly afterwards. Details surrounding the exact cause of his death had yet to be officially disclosed as of the time of filing this report.
Oladipo’s death brings to an end a distinguished journalism career spanning nearly three decades, during which he established himself as a respected newsroom professional, political reporter and media entrepreneur.
He began his journalism career in the era of traditional newspaper publishing before becoming one of the practitioners who embraced the transition to digital journalism.
Oladipo worked with several prominent Nigerian media organisations, including PUNCH Newspapers, where he served as Politics Editor. He also had professional stints with Nigerian Tribune, Nigerian Compass and The Sun newspapers.
He later founded The Eagle Online under Premium Eagle Media Limited, building the platform into a notable digital news outlet covering politics, business, security, entertainment and other major national issues.
Beyond his work as a publisher, Oladipo played an important role in the development and professionalisation of online journalism in Nigeria.
He served as president of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP), where he contributed to discussions on credibility, ethics, professionalism and the sustainability of digital media.
He was also the founding president of the Innovative Media Partners Cooperative Multipurpose Society (IMPCMS), an initiative established to promote collaboration and empowerment among media professionals.
Colleagues and associates remembered Oladipo as a passionate journalist who was committed to factual reporting, newsroom excellence and the mentoring of younger practitioners.
His sudden death represents a significant loss to Nigeria’s media industry, particularly at a time when his experience and contributions remained valuable to the evolving digital journalism landscape.
The City Pulse News joins journalists, media organisations, colleagues, friends and associates in mourning the death of the respected journalist and media leader.
May his soul rest in peace.
