Fast-rising Afrobeats star Qing Madi has sparked conversation after describing the financial rewards in the music industry as comparable to “drug money,” underscoring just how lucrative the business can be.
Speaking during a recent appearance on the Tea With Tay podcast, the 19-year-old singer offered a candid perspective on the disparity between average earnings in Nigeria and the income artists can command from a single performance.
According to her, while many Nigerians working conventional 9-to-5 jobs may earn around ₦500,000 monthly, an artist can make as much as ₦20 million from just one show.

“Music money is not normal; it is like drug money,” she said, stressing that the scale of earnings often surprises people outside the industry.
Despite her financial success, Qing Madi born Chimamanda Pearl Chukwuma said she deliberately avoids showcasing her wealth on social media. She explained that public displays of affluence could shift attention away from her artistry and distort how she is perceived.

“I don’t want people looking at me and seeing money,” she noted, adding that she prefers to be recognised for her talent rather than her riches.
Beyond finances, the singer also reflected on why music resonates deeply with Nigerians. She suggested that limited access to therapy and mental health support has made music a vital emotional outlet, offering many a form of escape and healing.
Her remarks provide rare insight into both the economics of Afrobeats and the cultural role music plays in everyday Nigerian life.
