Lil Kesh reveals he nearly gave away his breakout hit ‘Efejoku’ to Young John before Olamide urged him to reclaim the song that launched his career

Lil Kesh nearly gave away hit is the focus of a stunning revelation made by the Afrobeats star during a recent interview.

Keshinro Ololade, professionally known as Lil Kesh, opened up about how he almost handed over his breakout single, Efejoku, without realising its career-defining potential.

Speaking to NotJustOk on Saturday, the rapper and singer admitted that at the time of recording the track, he didn’t feel a strong connection to it because of his deep preference for melody-driven music.

This led him to offer the song to its producer and longtime collaborator, Young John.

“I dashed it out. I didn’t know the value of the song… Baddo said, ‘Go back and collect your song,’” Lil Kesh recalled.

His reference to Baddo was none other than YBNL boss Olamide, who played a key role in convincing him to take the track seriously.

According to Lil Kesh, it was only after playing the song at a casual gathering with Olamide and others at a hotel in Lagos that he truly saw its impact.

I dashed it out. I didn’t know the value of the song… Baddo said, ‘Go back and collect your song.

Olamide’s reaction, a mix of surprise and urgency, pushed him to reclaim what would later become one of his most successful releases.

Lil Kesh’s confession sheds light on the unpredictable nature of hit-making in the music industry.

Although he initially overlooked the song’s potential, Efejoku went on to dominate airwaves and solidify his place in Nigeria’s vibrant music scene.

Now widely regarded as a mainstay of street-pop and Afrobeats, Lil Kesh credits moments like these for shaping his journey and keeping him grounded.
