Lawyers walk out during public hearing on Land Use Charge

There was a mixture of drama and confusion at the Lagos state House of Assembly on Tuesday, March 27, when lawyers reportedly staged a walk-out at a public hearing on proposed amendment to the land use charge.

It was learnt that the lawyers demanded for the postponement of the public hearing on proposed amendment of the bill

The issue started when the chairman of the Ikeja branch of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Adeshina Ogunlana, complained that stakeholders had no access to the bill proposing the amendment.

He then asked for the event to be postponed so the stakeholders would have time to read through the document for meaningful contributions.

But the chairman of the ad-hoc committee of the House saddled with the bill, Bayo Oshinnowo, argued that there was no basis for the postponement of the public hearing.

Premium Times also reports Mudashiru Obasa, the speaker of the Assembly as arguing that only eight sections are amended and that this as well as the supposed non-availability of the document, was not enough demand for the postponement.

This resulted in the protest which made the lawyers stage a walk-out.

At the time of this report, the angry lawyers were outside the venue of the public hearing.
