The move targets disposable plastic bags, cups, and products with single-use plastic straws, which pose serious environmental and flooding risks.

Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, shared a video of the operation showing officers confiscating the prohibited items from stores in Lekki, Ire-Akari, Jakande Estate, Ejigbo, and Idimu.
Wahab stated, “Our enforcement team today visited Blenco Supermarket in Lekki to enforce the ban on single-use plastics. This is part of our wider efforts to ensure compliance with the state’s directive on phasing out SUP.”

Since the enforcement began on July 1, after an 18-month moratorium, businesses have been urged to transition to eco-friendly alternatives.
The ban particularly focuses on stopping the sale and use of disposable plastic bags, including the common black nylon bags.
The Lagos State Government is committed to continuous monitoring and collaboration with businesses to adopt sustainable practices that will safeguard the environment and reduce urban flooding caused by plastic waste clogging drainage systems.
