The Lagos State Government has expressed satisfaction with the high level of compliance recorded during the reintroduced monthly environmental sanitation exercise held on Saturday.
The exercise, which ran from 6:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m., marked the first coordinated statewide sanitation effort in nearly a decade and witnessed strong participation from residents across the state.
Speaking after monitoring activities, the First Lady, Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, described the turnout as encouraging, noting that public acceptance of the initiative is steadily growing. She emphasized that residents must go beyond the monthly exercise by embracing daily cleanliness habits to ensure a healthier environment.

Also commenting, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, revealed that compliance exceeded 98 percent. He attributed the success to voluntary participation and effective grassroots sensitisation, stressing that the government is prioritising community ownership over strict enforcement.
At the local level, Chairman of Ikoyi-Obalende LCDA, Bola Oladunjoye, said extensive awareness campaigns—including radio jingles, newspaper publications, and community outreach in local languages and Pidgin—helped drive participation. She urged residents to sustain the momentum by turning out consistently on the last Saturday of every month.

In Agege, Head of Service Bode Agoro praised residents for their impressive turnout, noting visible improvements in street cleanliness. He, however, called for intensified public sensitisation to further boost participation.
Chairman of Agege LGA, Ganiyu Obasa, highlighted ongoing sanitation efforts in the area, including the deployment of over 250 sweepers, waste compactors, and routine drainage maintenance. He described the reintroduction of the monthly exercise as a timely move that complements existing environmental initiatives, adding that enforcement measures may still be necessary to sustain compliance.
The monthly sanitation programme forms part of the state government’s broader strategy to enhance environmental sustainability and safeguard public health across Lagos.
