Lagos Reaffirms Economic Dominance as Obasa Declares State Nigeria’s Investment Hub

The Speaker of the Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa and head of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, has reaffirmed Lagos State as the central engine of Nigeria’s economy, insisting that the state continues to outpace the Federal Capital Territory in driving national economic growth.

Obasa made the statement on Thursday, April 16, during a courtesy visit by the new leadership of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) to the State Assembly. The delegation was led by its President, Engr. Leye Kupoluyi.

Speaking during the engagement, Obasa described Lagos as Nigeria’s most attractive destination for investment, pointing to a series of pro-business legislative frameworks introduced by the Assembly. These include the Public-Private Partnership Law, the Employment Trust Fund Law, and the Lagos State Lottery Law, all aimed at strengthening entrepreneurship, improving access to finance, and encouraging private sector participation.

According to him, these laws reflect the Assembly’s long-standing commitment to building a business-friendly environment that supports economic expansion and job creation.

“Lagos is the center of Nigeria’s economy. We have always been pro-business and pro-people, and our laws reflect this commitment. Lagos is strategically placed to be the leading light of Africa, geographically, economically, and otherwise,” Obasa stated.

In his remarks, LCCI President Engr. Kupoluyi commended the Lagos State Assembly for its policy direction and legislative interventions, while urging deeper collaboration between lawmakers and the private sector. He emphasized the need for continued reforms that ease business operations and stimulate sustainable growth.

The LCCI delegation included senior executives such as Chief Varkey Verghese, Sir Ladi Smith, Princess Layo Bakare-Okeowo, Dr. Chinyere Almona, Dr. Sunnie Omeiza-Michael, and Mrs. Akintunde Temitope.

Also present at the meeting were members of the House including Hon. Stephen Ogundipe, Hon. Oladele Ajomale, Hon. Jubril AbdulKareem, Hon. Bonu Solomon, and Hon. Ajayi, alongside the Clerk of the House, Mr. Lekan Onafeko, and aides to the Speaker.

The visit reinforced a shared commitment between both institutions to position Lagos not only as Nigeria’s economic powerhouse but also as a leading commercial hub on the African continent.
