Joy Afekafe sentenced to life imprisonment for killing FUT Minna lecturer. Justice ruled her guilty of culpable homicide and armed robbery committed at age 14

Joy Afekafe life imprisonment sentence has been delivered by a Minna High Court after the teenager was found guilty of killing FUT Minna lecturer, Dr. (Mrs.) Funmilayo Sherifat Adefolalu.

Presiding over the case, Justice Mohammed Adishetu Mohammed of Minna High Court 4 ruled that the 16-year-old committed culpable homicide and armed robbery when she was just 14.

The court sentenced her to life imprisonment and an additional 10 years for the robbery charge, both to run concurrently.

The crime occurred in October 2023 after Afekafe was dismissed from her job as a housemaid by the late lecturer.

She had been hired through Pastor Ojo Peters, whom both her mother and the victim knew from the Voice of Mercy Church.

According to prosecutors, Afekafe returned weeks later with two male accomplices, DJ Wallex and DJ Smart, to exact revenge.

During her confession to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID), she admitted they stormed the Gbaiko residence on October 28, stabbed the lecturer multiple times, and fatally struck her with a wooden stool.

“The death of Dr. Mrs. Funmilayo Sherifat Adefolalu was caused by the convict with her friends, now at large,” said Justice Mohammed. “They used knives and eventually a wooden stool with the intention to kill her.”

The attackers made away with the victim’s phones, laptop, and foreign currency. The two male accomplices remain at large.

Under Nigerian law, the death penalty cannot be imposed on individuals under 18. Hence, the court gave a life sentence for homicide and 10 years for armed robbery.

Despite her age at the time, the judge concluded that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt.
