Jonathan Honors Yar’Adua at 16: Celebrates Legacy of Integrity and Service

Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has paid glowing tribute to the late Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, describing him as a “servant leader” whose legacy continues to inspire, 16 years after his passing.

In a statement shared on Tuesday, Jonathan reflected on his time serving as vice president under Yar’Adua, recalling a leader defined by humility, integrity, and a strong commitment to justice. He noted that Yar’Adua earned widespread respect as the “Gentleman President” for his calm disposition and principled leadership.

Jonathan described the late president as not only a superior but also a trusted partner and friend, emphasizing the shared vision that guided their administration. According to him, their leadership was rooted in the pursuit of an inclusive, united, and just Nigeria anchored on democratic values and the rule of law.

He highlighted Yar’Adua’s belief that national strength lies in upholding the sanctity of the ballot and maintaining unwavering respect for legal processes. Jonathan added that the late leader consistently placed national interest above personal ambition, demonstrating rare humility in positions of power.

The former president also pointed to Yar’Adua’s achievements in peace-building, particularly his role in fostering stability, noting that his approach remains a model for effective governance. He stressed that the late leader understood the importance of acknowledging challenges and taking deliberate steps to address them.

Calling on current and future leaders to emulate Yar’Adua’s example, Jonathan said leadership must be grounded in accountability, transparency, and genuine service to the people.

He concluded with prayers for the repose of Yar’Adua’s soul and urged Nigerians to uphold the values of integrity and patriotism that defined his tenure.

Yar’Adua, who assumed office on May 29, 2007, succeeded Olusegun Obasanjo and served until his death on May 5, 2010, following a prolonged illness. His presidency is notably remembered for initiatives such as the Niger Delta Amnesty Programme and efforts to strengthen adherence to the rule of law.
