Surveyors in Lagos State have been urged to actively participate in politics and governance as a pathway to promoting value-driven leadership and accelerating national development.
The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, made the call at the 2026 Annual General Meeting and Luncheon of the Association of Private Practising Surveyors of Nigeria (APPSN), Lagos State Branch.
Represented by Adewusi Ademola, Wahab emphasised that professionals must go beyond passive roles and engage directly in governance to influence policy decisions and development outcomes.

“Who gets what, when, and how hinges on leadership quality, which ultimately determines the quality of life,” he said.
He noted that surveyors occupy a strategic position in land administration, urban planning, and infrastructure development, making their input critical in shaping policies through research, data-driven insights, and advocacy.

Wahab also encouraged professional bodies to promote political awareness among members and create platforms that support participation in governance, stressing that nation-building requires integrity, discipline, and commitment to service.
Chairman of APPSN Lagos, Afolabi Olaoluwa, described the event as a platform for reflection, innovation, and professional advancement. He highlighted the role of surveyors across all stages of development, noting that technology has significantly enhanced precision and real-time data delivery in the field.
Olaoluwa advised the public to engage only certified professionals for land-related projects to prevent costly errors, while also calling for greater involvement of experts in governance.
On land administration, he advocated reforms to tackle challenges such as land grabbing and uneven housing distribution, urging authorities to ensure equitable access to affordable housing.
Also speaking, the Chairman of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors (NIS), Lagos State Branch, Adedeji Olanrewaju, underscored the importance of integrity and accountability in leadership.
He urged practitioners to uphold professional standards, mentor younger colleagues, and remain committed to excellence in advancing the profession and contributing to national development.
