A criminal who triggered a police chase and drove down the wrong way of a motorway was on the run from prison.
The fugitive was in the midst of a two-week crime jaunt where he nabbed a Ferrari California and an Audi S5.
Police simply can’t cope with their workload due to cuts, admits senior officer
After Bilal Bashir broke out of HMP Hewell he nabbed the £155,000 car.
The Birmingham-based criminal posed with vodka and banknotes just hours after his daring escape.
Part of a masked gang, Bashir dumped the vehicle and caused £40,000 worth of damage.
After being chased in his stolen Audi along the M6 near junction 5, he repeatedly rammed into a police car then tried to flee the busy motorway.
He had initially jumped jail in March 2016 from the exercise yard during a four-year stint for burglary.
Bashir was found at a friend’s flat and was arrested a few days later.
From Alum Rock, he has now been sentenced to three years for burglary, six years for the Ferrari theft and 12 months for dangerous driving – all being served consecutively.
Det Con Darren Brown, of Force CID, said: ‘Several witnesses came forward and we had detailed descriptions as well as discarded clothing and CCTV.

‘The Ferrari was recovered but the damage caused was estimated to be £40,000.
‘An orange glove found in the centre console matched one seen worn by the Audi driver and provided a DNA match to Bashir.’
