Nigeria’s democracy has repeatedly been interrupted by death. Presidents, governors, ministers and lawmakers have left office not through elections or resignation, but through illness, assassination, accidents or violence — forcing sudden successions and by-elections that reshape political landscapes.
Some deaths followed long battles with disease. Others came in the chaos of coups or the tragedy of crashes. The most consequential in the Fourth Republic remains the passing of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua in 2010, which elevated Goodluck Jonathan to the presidency. At state level, the deaths of governors such as Mamman Bello Ali, Patrick Yakowa and Rotimi Akeredolu handed power to their deputies overnight.
Members of the National Assembly have also fallen in significant numbers, prompting the Independent National Electoral Commission to organise repeated by-elections. This updated compilation, current as of September 2026, records notable civilian politicians who died while still holding public office.
1. Abubakar Tafawa Balewa — Prime Minister
Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, Nigeria’s first and only Prime Minister, was among the earliest high-profile leaders to die in office. He assumed the role at independence in 1960 and continued after the country became a republic in 1963. His government ended violently during the first military coup on 15 January 1966, when he was killed alongside other senior figures. Official records list his tenure from 1 October 1960 to 15 January 1966.
2. Ahmadu Bello — Premier of the Northern Region
Sir Ahmadu Bello, the Sardauna of Sokoto and one of the most powerful politicians of the First Republic, was Premier of the Northern Region when he was assassinated in the same January 1966 coup. He was killed at his official residence in Kaduna while still serving as premier and leader of the Northern People’s Congress.
3. Samuel Ladoke Akintola — Premier of the Western Region
Chief Samuel Ladoke Akintola, Premier of the Western Region and a central figure in the region’s bitter political crisis, was also assassinated on 15 January 1966 in Ibadan. His death brought an abrupt end to his tenure amid the turmoil of the First Republic’s final days.
4. Shehu Kangiwa — Governor of Sokoto State
Shehu Kangiwa became the first elected civilian governor of Sokoto State in the Second Republic, taking office in October 1979 on the National Party of Nigeria platform. His term lasted just over two years. On 17 November 1981 he suffered fatal injuries after falling from his horse during a polo tournament in Kaduna. His deputy, Garba Nadama, succeeded him.
5. Bola Ige — Attorney-General and Minister of Justice
Former Oyo State Governor Chief Bola Ige was serving as Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice when he was assassinated at his Bodija, Ibadan residence on 23 December 2001. He had earlier held the Power and Steel portfolio under President Olusegun Obasanjo. More than two decades later, the unresolved circumstances of his killing continue to draw attention.
6. Mamman Bello Ali — Governor of Yobe State
Mamman Bello Ali, elected governor of Yobe State in 2007 on the All Nigeria Peoples Party ticket after serving in the Senate, died on 26 January 2009 while receiving treatment for leukaemia in the United States. His deputy, Ibrahim Gaidam, assumed the governorship.
7. Umaru Musa Yar’Adua — President of Nigeria
Umaru Musa Yar’Adua remains the only Fourth Republic president to die in office. Elected in 2007 after two terms as Katsina State governor, his presidency was increasingly overshadowed by ill health. After months of medical treatment in Saudi Arabia, he returned home and died on 5 May 2010 at the age of 58. Vice-President Goodluck Jonathan was sworn in the following day. Official records place his tenure from 29 May 2007 to 5 May 2010.
8. Gyang Dantong — Senator, Plateau North
Senator Gyang Dalyop Dantong, representing Plateau North, died on 8 July 2012 during an attack at a mass burial for victims of earlier violence in Plateau State. A state lawmaker, Gyang Fulani, was also killed in the incident. Dantong had been elected to the Senate in 2007 and re-elected in 2011.
9. Patrick Yakowa — Governor of Kaduna State
Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa became governor of Kaduna State in 2010 after Namadi Sambo’s elevation to the vice-presidency, and won the 2011 election in his own right. He died on 15 December 2012 in a Nigerian Navy helicopter crash in Bayelsa State while returning from a funeral. Former National Security Adviser Andrew Azazi and four others also perished. Deputy Governor Mukhtar Ramalan Yero was sworn in as his successor.
10. Pius Ewherido — Senator, Delta Central
Senator Pius Ewherido, elected in 2011 on the Democratic People’s Party platform, died on 30 June 2013 at the National Hospital, Abuja, after a brief illness. He was Vice-Chairman of the Senate Committee on Marine Transport at the time.
11. Dahiru Awaisu Kuta — Senator, Niger East
Senator Dahiru Awaisu Kuta, who had represented Niger East since 2007 and chaired the Senate Committee on Federal Character, died in June 2014 while receiving medical care. His death marked the third loss of a serving senator during the Seventh Senate.
12. Isiaka Adeleke — Senator, Osun West
Former Osun State Governor Isiaka Adeleke, the state’s first civilian governor, was serving as senator for Osun West when he died on 23 April 2017. Elected on the APC platform in 2015, his death triggered a by-election won by his younger brother, Ademola Adeleke, who later became governor.
13. Mustapha Bukar — Senator, Katsina North
Mustapha Bukar, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Capital Market, died on 4 April 2018 while still representing Katsina North.
14. Umar Buba Jibril — House of Representatives Deputy Leader
Umar Buba Jibril, Deputy Majority Leader of the House and representative of Lokoja/Kogi Federal Constituency, died in Abuja on 30 March 2018 at the age of 58 after a prolonged illness.
15. Benjamin Uwajumogu — Senator, Imo North
Benjamin Uwajumogu, former Speaker of the Imo State House of Assembly, died on 18 December 2019 while representing Imo North — the first of several deaths that would hit the Ninth Senate in quick succession.
16. Ignatius Longjan — Senator, Plateau South
Former Plateau Deputy Governor Ignatius Longjan entered the Senate in 2019 and died on 10 February 2020 at the age of 75 after a prolonged illness.
17. Rose Oko — Senator, Cross River North
Rose Oko, serving her second term and chairing the Senate Committee on Trade and Investment, died on 23 March 2020 at a medical facility in the United Kingdom.
18. Bayo Osinowo — Senator, Lagos East
Adebayo “Pepperito” Osinowo, who rose from the Lagos State House of Assembly to the Senate in 2019, died on 15 June 2020 while chairing the Senate Committee on Industries.
19. Haruna Maitala — House of Representatives
Haruna Maitala, representing Jos North/Bassa, died in a road accident on 2 April 2021 while travelling from Abuja to Jos. His son, driver and security aide also lost their lives.
20. Ossy Prestige — House of Representatives
Ossy Prestige, the APGA lawmaker representing Aba North/Aba South and serving his second term, died in February 2021 while receiving medical treatment abroad.
21. Jude Ise-Idehen — House of Representatives
Jude Ise-Idehen, the PDP representative of Egor/Ikpoba-Okha in Edo State, died on 1 July 2022 at the age of 52. He had already secured his party’s ticket for the 2023 elections.
22. Rotimi Akeredolu — Governor of Ondo State
Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN, former Nigerian Bar Association president, was still governor of Ondo State when he died on 27 December 2023. Elected in 2016 and re-elected in 2020, his second term was marked by prolonged health challenges. His deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, was sworn in as governor. Akeredolu became the fourth elected civilian governor to die in office after Kangiwa, Ali and Yakowa.
23. Isa Dogonyaro — House of Representatives
Isa Dogonyaro, the 46-year-old APC lawmaker for Babura/Garki in Jigawa State and Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria Control, died in Abuja on 10 May 2024 after a brief illness.
24. Olaide Akinremi — House of Representatives
Olaide Adewale Akinremi, popularly known as Jagaban and representative of Ibadan North, died on 10 July 2024 while serving his second term and chairing the House Committee on Science Research Institutes.
25. Ekene Abubakar Adams — House of Representatives
Ekene Abubakar Adams, the Labour Party first-term lawmaker for Chikun/Kajuru in Kaduna State and Chairman of the House Committee on Sports, died on 16 July 2024.
26. Ifeanyi Ubah — Senator, Anambra South
Businessman-politician Ifeanyi Ubah died in London in July 2024 while serving his second term as senator for Anambra South. He had first entered the Senate in 2019 and remained a major political figure in the state.
27. Adewunmi Onanuga — Deputy Chief Whip, House of Representatives
Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga, Deputy Chief Whip and representative of Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North in Ogun State, died on 15 January 2025 at the age of 59 after a brief illness. She had been elected in 2019 and returned in 2023.
28. Barinada Mpigi — Senator, Rivers South-East
Barinada Mpigi, who had spent more than a decade in the National Assembly and chaired the Senate Committee on Works, died on 19 February 2026 at the age of 64 while representing Rivers South-East.
29. Muhammad Danjuma Hassan — House of Representatives
Muhammad Danjuma Hassan, first-term lawmaker for Dawakin Kudu/Warawa in Kano State and Deputy Chairman of the House Committee on Judiciary, died on 10 April 2026 at the age of 66.
30. Yaya Bauchi Tongo — House of Representatives
Yaya Bauchi Tongo, representing Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye and Chairman of the Nigeria–United Arab Emirates Parliamentary Friendship Group, died on 12 June 2026 in an Abuja hospital after a brief illness. The House declared his seat vacant, paving the way for a by-election.
These successive losses underline a recurring feature of Nigerian political life: the abrupt interruption of mandates by death, and the constitutional mechanisms that ensure continuity even as the human cost continues to mount.
