Dr. Lanre Teriba, better known as Atorise, has spent more than two decades transforming Nigerian indigenous gospel music. The singer, songwriter, composer and producer is widely credited with pioneering Tungba Gospel — a vibrant fusion of traditional Yoruba tungba rhythm and contemporary gospel that has carried praise and worship far beyond Nigeria’s borders.
Atorise’s path to the stage was far from glamorous. After studying Accounting at the Federal Polytechnic, Offa, he faced the harsh realities of unemployment and, at one point, worked as a bus conductor. Yet the musical gift he had long nurtured refused to fade. In 1998, music promoter Tunde Olokodana recognised that talent and supported his recording ambitions. A year later, Atorise released his debut album, Atorise (Reformer), marking the official launch of a career that would span roughly 20 albums.
What set him apart was his refusal to dilute his cultural roots. Atorise insisted that Yoruba language, indigenous rhythms and gospel messages could thrive together without compromise. Albums such as Atorise Series 2, Onise Iyanu, Alagbawi Nla, King of Kings, New Chapter, Promise & Fulfilled, Duru Wura, Mighty God, Unstoppable God, Radical Praise, Ope Nla and Legendary Praise illustrate an artiste who has consistently evolved while remaining true to his sound.
His 2026 releases — including Tungba Reloaded and the Praise and Tungba Expo series — signal that Atorise is not resting on nostalgia. Instead, he is actively introducing the Tungba sound to a new digital generation.
International stages have further amplified his influence. Tours of the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom in 2008, 2010, 2016, 2017, 2022 and 2025 have taken Yoruba rhythms and gospel messages to audiences thousands of kilometres from home. His 2008 American tour, which covered 21 states, remains a landmark achievement that helped position him among the Nigerian gospel artistes capable of carrying indigenous music onto the global stage.
Atorise has also challenged conventional boundaries, performing in entertainment venues and clubs with the conviction that the message of praise should reach people wherever they are. Recognition has followed: Exclusive Impact Gospel Artist of the Year, Lagos Television Award of Excellence, Most Outstanding Gospel Artiste, Gospel Icon of the Year, and honours from the Gospel Music Association of Nigeria and the Nigerian Institute of Journalism, among others.
Beyond the awards and the catalogue, Atorise’s career represents something larger — cultural preservation at a time when African music commands unprecedented global attention.
